The king, encouraged by Azariah’s sermon, removes more idols and repairs the Lord’s altar. Israelites who recognize God’s presence with Asa assemble to sacrifice a great portion of the plunder from their victory over Zerah.

They make a pact among themselves to seek the Lord wholeheartedly. The worshipers kill persons who do not agree with their resolve. This harsh treatment is reserved for those who might lead the nation astray (Dt 13:6-11; 17:2-7). In response to this worship, the Lord gives them rest.

Asa makes his reform personal by deposing the queen mother and burning her Asherah pole. The chronicler gives Asa an overall favorable report even though he did not destroy the high places. In contrast to Rehoboam, Asa’s heart was pure in intent to serve God. He did not completely purge the nation of false religion, but he did much to reestablish true worship.
