The theme of incredulity is extended to Sarah who views with derision the promise of a son in her old age (v.12). There is nothing new in the message brought by the divine visitants to Abraham, but Sarah must now be brought into partnership in the faith venture. Reason argues against the promise. Faith confronts the heart of the issue: Is anything too hard for the Lord? (v.14). That is the fundamental question now imposed upon the community of faith. The answer to it will determine the future and the very existence of the community.
