E. Jesus and Legion (5:1-20)

The surprising length and detail of this story suggest its importance for Mark. Three themes are present. First, Mark leaves no doubt as to the enormity of evil at work here and the even greater extent of Jesus' power over evil. Second, the question of identity, raised again in 4:41, is answered by the spirits in 5:7: He is the Son of the Most High God. On the other hand, the people (v.17) fail to perceive the work of the Lord in their midst, being more concerned about their loss of property. Finally, it is significant that, in crossing the lake, Jesus enters gentile territory. As if to anticipate the church’s mission among the Gentiles, Jesus unexpectedly instructs the man to tell others what the Lord has done for him (v.19).
