E. Transition: Preparation for Paul’s Visit (4:18-21)

This section is a crucial transition from Paul’s discussion in chs. 1-4 to that in chs. 5-16. The behavioral issues he addresses in the subsequent chapters seem to be specific manifestations of the Corinthian arrogance he attacks and warns them to forsake in the preceding chapters. Paul expects them to resolve these issues before he visits Corinth again. Their response to his warnings will determine whether he comes with severity or with gentleness. In 2 Corinthians we learn that their continuing arrogance made this visit extremely unpleasant for both Paul and them.

Timothy was not only to remind the Corinthians of Paul’s positive example, but to embody his warning to them to forsake their arrogant lifestyle in favor of his humble example. They not only have Paul’s representative and this letter to reckon with, but the apostle himself. His visit will verify whether their high claims conform with reality or are merely empty boasts. Are they only talk or also power (4:19)? Paul’s visit will determine whether the kingdom of God is already here or not (4:20; see Ro 5:17).
