In a speech not included in 1Ki 15, the chronicler records the Lord’s evaluation of this second military action. Hanani rebukes Asa because he relied not on the Lord but on a human ally, who should have been treated as an adversary. The seer contrasts this battle with the Lord’s victory against Zerah. Asa, using an improper method, successfully repelled Baasha’s troops. He could have achieved a better result by relying on the Lord. In punishment, God will withdraw his peace.
