The life of Christian discipleship, characterized as it is by a surpassing righteousness (5:20), could easily lead to an attitude of moral and spiritual superiority, to a judgmental attitude toward others. Jesus therefore ends his discussion of requirements of the kingdom by warning against such a tendency (7:1-5; cf. 6:14-15). Mt 7:5 qualifies the prohibition regarding judging: Although disciples must not assume a condemnatory spirit toward others, they should employ discrimination in their ministries (cf. 10:11-15). In the final analysis, however, the principle of active love, which God himself models, must be determinative in all interpersonal relationships (7:7-12).
