The explanation of this unfortunate event is found in Jesus' prediction in vv.31-32. When Peter denied his connection with Jesus, he was being sifted by Satan. This was a moment of temptation for Peter, and he yielded. But when he remembered Jesus' words, he wept. His weeping was a sign of repentance.
