H. Fight of Faith (6:11-16)

Unlike those who wander from the faith (6:10), Timothy is to flee the desire for riches, pursue godliness, and run the race of faith. Fight the good fight misses the athletic imagery of the games used here. This is in contrast to the military imagery of 1:18. “Take hold of” conveys the idea of a prize for which the athlete reaches. To which you were called when” is in keeping with Timothy’s public testimony to serve Christ. Thus Paul charges Timothy before God to maintain a consistent lifestyle that will bring no reproach on Christ or his church.

At the mention of Christ’s return, Paul breaks into a doxology full of biblical doctrine (vv.15-16). God controls the time of Jesus' return; God is ultimate Ruler, King, and Lord (Dt 10:17); God is immortal; God lives in unapproachable light (Ps 104:2); and no one has seen or can see God (Ex 33:20). Little wonder that God is to receive honor and might forever.
