H. The Sign of Jonah and the Lamp of the Body (11:29-36)

Although Jesus performed miracles out of compassion for people’s needs, he refused to perform them merely for the sake of publicity. The sign that he gave the people was the preaching of repentance, the sign of Jonah. Indeed, he was greater than either Solomon or Jonah.

His words about the lamp of the body describe some characteristics of the life of discipleship. In that life men and women do not hide the light of revelation which they have received from Christ; they make it available to others (v.33). And in that life the whole person is illuminated by the spiritual vision that is obtained by looking to Christ (vv.34-35). “Let your eye be singly fixed on him, aim only at pleasing God; and while you do this, your whole soul will be full of wisdom, holiness, and happiness” (Wesley, Notes, 245-46).
