I. Authorship and Dating

Until the nineteenth century it was commonly assumed that 2 Timothy was written by the apostle Paul. Since that time some scholars have questioned the chronology, theology, ecclesiology, and vocabulary of the letter. For a brief discussion of these areas, see introduction to Pastoral Epistles and 1 Timothy—Introduction: Authorship and Dating. No compelling reason forces us to accept the notion of non-Pauline authorship. The teachings and tone are consistent with Paul’s other writings. It was written from Rome about a.d. 67-68.
