I. Introduction (1:1-4)

Luke explains that he wrote his gospel to give an orderly account of the events and teaching of Jesus' ministry and to enable Theophilus to know the truth about them. Theophilus may have been a high-ranking Roman, as the words “most excellent” suggest. His name literally means “friend of God.” He already had been instructed in Christianity and was probably a Christian.
