I. Introduction (1:1-7)

The introduction (1:1-7) to the book not only identifies Solomon as the patron of proverbial wisdom, but through a series of infinitive clauses (vv.2-4) supplies the reader with the function of the book. The young and simple (open-minded) are to learn how to live wisely. The book will even help the wise to increase their knowledge (vv.5-6). Climaxing this brief prologue is the theological expression of the ultimate source of knowledge, the fear of the Lord.
