I. Salutation (Vv.1-4)

As in 1 John the author identifies himself as the elder (see notes on 2Jn 1). This personal note is addressed to an individual named Gaius, possibly a leading member of this church. It is impossible to determine precisely which Gaius is intended, since this was one of the most common names in the Roman Empire. He is held in high esteem by the writer who has utmost confidence in his religion. Once more, the central concern about walking in the truth appears.

The greeting is somewhat unusual. Instead of the common form normally used, there is a more personal wish for Gaius’s physical and spiritual well-being.
