I. Superscription (1:1)

Generally believed to be an editorial addition, the superscription nevertheless identifies the true source of the prophecy. It comes from Yahweh, the Lord, and is addressed to the Jewish community. The Lord’s messenger is the instrument through whom the message comes. Malachi probably is borrowed from 3:1 where the meaning is simply “my messenger” or “my angel.”
