I. Woes to Pharisees and Legal Experts (11:37-54)

Controversy continued when a Pharisee invited Jesus to a meal. Jesus seized the occasion to denounce people who were obsessed with outward show but were inwardly impure. They sought a reputation through their good works but neglected love and justice. He also chided the legal experts for their oppressiveness in imposing unnecessary obligations on people, their hypocrisy in giving honor to martyrs, and their reactionary habit of hindering people from understanding the Scriptures.
