IV. Literary Characteristics

Paul’s tone is warm—“my dear son” (1:2)—but forceful, as illustrated by his frequent use of “command.” He often uses the word godliness to describe behavior that reflects well on being a member of God’s household (2:2; 3:16; 4:8; 6:5, 6). Twice (2:5-6; 3:16) Paul provides hymns that focus on Christ.
