J. Importance of These Commands and Teachings (6:20-21)

Paul closes by commanding Timothy to be vigilant for the truth. Knowledge suggests that an early form of gnosticism may have existed in Ephesus (see Introduction: Purpose). However, Paul may be ridiculing a system that exalts the human mind and claims special knowledge but that is antithetical to the clear teachings of Christ. Staying true to Christ’s teachings requires grace; thus Paul’s benediction. You is plural, including more than Timothy. Only with God’s grace can we conduct ourselves as God’s household.
