K. Allegory of the Cooking Pot (24:1-14)

Ezekiel was instructed to note the date, which is equal to January 15, 588 B.C.E., “because the king of Babylon has laid siege to Jerusalem” (v.2). This sad date is still commemorated in Judaism as a fast day. Two years later Jerusalem and Judah fell to the Babylonians. The parable of the cooking pot dramatically predicted this sorry end, an end brought about and made necessary by the gross sins of the people. God’s judgment could be delayed no longer. God said, “The time has come for me to act. I will not hold back; I will not have pity, nor will I relent. You will be judged according to your conduct and your actions” (v.14).
