On the eastern shores of the Sea of Galilee in gentile territory Jesus encountered a formidable demoniac. The numerous demonic forces that possessed him seemed like a whole Roman legion. When Jesus cured him, the demons entered a herd of pigs, who rushed to their destruction. Being unclean animals, the pigs symbolize the world apart from God.
