VIII. The Sayings of King Lemuel (31:1-9)

This advice of a mother to her royal son centers around the theme of justice. He is to beware of the corrupting influence of women, a common theme in the ancient Middle East. Also, he is to avoid indulgence in drink that might cloud his judgment. Finally, he is urged to take up the cause of society’s under-privileged. The rich and powerful receive justice, for they can afford it; but the poor need the help of their ruler.
