CHIMNEY (אֲרֻבָּה, H748, actually: lattice), the latticed opening for the escape of smoke. In 2 Esdras 6:4 (KJV, Vulgate) “chimney” is tr. of Lat. caminos (which is the actual source of the word chimney), and in Esdras connotes not the flue or vent but the actual fire place or oven, for this is actually the oldest meaning of the word (Milton, L’Allegro, 111).
