Corners of the Earth

EARTH, CORNERS OF THE (כָּנָף, H4053, pl. כַּנְפֹ֥ות, wings [of birds], ends of garment, skirts, corners). Once כָּנָף, H4053, occurs in the sing. (Isa 24:16). Used with “land, earth,” כַּנְפֹ֥ות refers metaphorically to the totality of the area involved. All five occurrences are in poetic passages. The “four corners of the land” are mentioned in Ezekiel 7:2, while Isaiah 11:12 describes the regathering of Israel from the four corners of the earth, that is, the whole world. Cf. the similar Akkad. idiom kipat irbitti. Job 38:13 emphasizes the idea of “skirts” which God grasps to shake out the wicked of the earth. (See Job 37:3.)
