Elam

ELAM ē ləm (עֵילָ֣ם, LXX Αιλάμ, meaning uncertain; perhaps high land). 1. A son of Shem and the progenitor of the Elamites (Gen 10:22; 1 Chron 1:17). See [http://biblegateway/wiki/Elam (Country), Elamites ELAM, ELAMITES].

2. A priest who participated in the dedication of the walls of Jerusalem in Nehemiah’s time (Neh 12:42).

3. A son of Shahach and descendant of Benjamin (1 Chron 8:24).

4. A Korahite in the time of David who was a gatekeeper (1 Chron 26:3).

5. One of the chiefs who are said to have sealed, with other leaders, the covenant of Ezra (Neh 10:14).

6. The eponym of a family of which 1,254 returned to Pal. after the Exile under Zerubbabel (Ezra 2:7; Neh 7:12; 1 Esd 5:12). It has been suggested that “the other Elam” (Ezra 2:31) with whom also 1,254 returned is the same as the Elam of Ezra 2:7. Jeshaiah, another member of this family returned with Ezra (Ezra 8:7). Still another member of this family, “Shecaniah the son of Jahaziel, of the sons of Elam,” suggested to Ezra that Hebrews who had married non-Hebrew wives put away these wives and their children (Ezra 10:2-4). Six of the men of this family put away their foreign wives (Ezra 10:26).
