The Eleven

ELEVEN, THE (οἱ ἕνδεκα, the eleven). The eleven apostles (Acts 1:26) or disciples (Matt 28:16) of Jesus, remaining after the death of Judas (Mark 16:14; Luke 24:9, 33; Acts 2:14). The use of the Gr. definite article sets them apart as a group who retained their continuity with the Twelve after the defection of Judas. They became “The Twelve” again after the choice of Matthias (Acts 1:26; 6:2; Rev 21:14). Listing the resurrection appearances of Jesus, Paul wrote of the Twelve though there were at that time only eleven (1 Cor 15:5). The Eleven as such appeared only as witnesses of the resurrection appearances of Jesus, mentioned in Matthew, Mark, Luke, and Acts.
