Eliel

ELIEL ĭ lī’ əl (אֱלִיאֵ֡ל, My God is God). The name of nine or perhaps ten different men in the OT. 1. An ancestor of Heman, a Kohathite (1 Chron 6:34). He was the great-grandfather of Samuel who was the grandfather of Heman, a singer appointed in David’s day for the service of song in the house of the Lord. He is prob. the same as Eliab (1 Chron 6:27) and Elihu (1 Sam 1:1).

2. The head of the house of his father in the eastern half of the tribe of Manasseh, a famous man of valor (1 Chron 5:24).

3. One who dwelt in Jerusalem in David’s day, a descendant of Benjamin (8:20).

4. Another Benjamite of the same period as number three above (8:22).

5. One of David’s mighty men (11:47). A Mahavite (11:46).

6. Another of David’s mighty men (11:47).

7. One of the eleven Gadites who joined David in the wilderness. These Gadites were mighty men of valor, trained for war, who were swift as a roe on the mountains. The least of these was said to be equal to 100 men (12:11). It is possible that he is the same as either number 5 or number 6 above.

8. The chief of the sons of Hebron, one of the Levites whom David gathered to carry the Ark to Jerusalem (15:9).

9. Possibly the same as number eight, but this is uncertain (15:11).

10. One of the overseers under the hand of Conaniah, the Levite, by appointment of Hezekiah (2 Chron 31:13). He had oversight of the tithes and offerings.
