Elm

ELM (אֵלָ֖ה, terebinth). Mentioned once (Hosea 4:13, KJV), “upon the hills and under...elms.” This word “elah” is frequently tr. oak (Isa 6:13). David killed Goliath in the “elah” valley.

The tree is unlikely to be elm (Ulmus campestris), because this is not known in Pal. The writer feels that the ’ēlâ must be the terebinth. In the LXX ’ēlâ is tr. “terebinth” (Pistacia terebinthus), and this is undoubtedly correct.
