ELTEKE, ELTEKEH ĕl’ tə kə (ֶלְתְּקֵ֥ה, אֶלְתְּקֵ֖א). A town in the territory of Dan (Josh 19:44). It was assigned to the Kohathite Levites (21:23). The Assyrian king Sennacherib destroyed the town in 701 b.c. on his way to Timnah and Ekron. In its environs, the decisive battle between the Assyrians and Egyptians was fought (2 Kings 18:13ff.; 19:8ff.). On this occasion it is probable that the forces defeated by Sennacherib consisted of Jews along with Ekronites and Egyptians. A natural place for these allies to meet and take their stand would have been on the high road between Ekron and Jerusalem. The site is prob. Khirbet el-Muqenna’, about six m. SE of Ekron and seven m. NW of Timnah.
