EPHER ē’ fər (עֵ֨פֶר׃֙, LXX Αφερ, Γαφερ, Γοφερ, Οφερ; a young hart, stag). A masculine proper name. 1. A son of Midian in the line of those who descended from Abraham through his concubine Keturah. Abraham sent these descendants away eastward into the E country (Gen 25:4-6; 1 Chron 1:33). There may have been more than one clan of Midian, or the name may be used broadly of different peoples. Some who were the descendants of Abraham were helpful to Israel (Exod 3:1) while others became bitter enemies (Num 31:2ff.; Judg 6:1ff.).

2. A son of Ezrah in the tribe of Judah (1 Chron 4:17).

3. A head of a household and mighty warrior in Manasseh (1 Chron 5:24).
