Euergetes

EUERGETES ū ûr’ jə tez (ευεργέτης, benefactor). A title of honor borne by two of the Ptolemaic kings, Ptolemy III (246-221 b.c.) and Ptolemy VII (145-116 b.c.). The author of Ecclesiasticus dates his work with reference to his coming “to Egypt in the thirty-eighth year of the reign of Euergetes.” (See Prologue.) Although he is not specific about which of the two men with this title he refers to, it is apparent that he has in mind the second.
