The Exodus and the Wanderings

The Exodus and the Wanderings. In Numbers, the Gershonites are divided into two “families” (i.e. “clans”): Libni (designated as “Ladan,” 1 Chron 23:7; see Gershom for examples of clans with two designations) and Shemei (Num 3:18, 21). Gershonites, “from a month old and upward” were numbered at 7,500 (3:22). They camped immediately to the W of the Tabernacle (3:23) and were responsible for carrying the Tabernacle (i.e. the ten linen curtains), the “tent” (i.e. the eleven goats’ hair curtains), the tent’s “covering” (i.e. the two skin coverings), the door curtains for the Tabernacle, the curtains for the court, the door curtains for the court, the tying cords for all the curtains, and other unspecified equipment (3:25, 26; 4:25, 26). Two wagons and four oxen were allotted to them for their burdens (7:7).
