Fawn

FAWN (עֹ֫פֶר, H6762, young stag; pl. עֳפָרִ֖ים, fawns). The word appears only in S of Sol, tr. young stag (2:9, 17; 8:14) and fawns (4:5; 7:3). The word meant originally “young animal” generally, but is now restricted to the young of certain deer, esp. Fallow and Roe Deer. It is sometimes applied to the young of antelopes, etc. The RSV trs. Genesis 49:21 as “hind...that bears comely fawns” on the basis of a conjectural emendation of the Heb text. The KJV renders it, “he giveth goodly words.” See Deer and Gazelle.
