Fetters

FETTERS. Originally used for bonds or shackles for the feet; then, by extension, for shackles and bonds in general. Relevant Biblical words are the following: Heb. כֶּ֫בֶל, H3890, (fetters; Ps 105:18) refers to foot-fetters as does Gr. πέδη, G4267, (Mark 5:4). Two words refer to chains used as fetters or bonds: Heb. זִּקִּ֑ים (Job 36:8) and Gr. ἅλυσις, G268, (Acts 28:20). Heb. נְחֻשְׁתַּ֔יִם (lit. “two bronzes”; Judg 16:21) was used for the two shackles which bound the two limbs (cf. Eng. usage of “irons” for metal shackles). This word is used for foot-fetters (2 Sam 3:34), but other examples could refer to shackles in general (e.g. 2 Chron 36:6). Greek δεσμός, G1301, (Luke 8:29) refers to bonds in general. Heb. אֵסוּר, H657, (Judg 15:14) seems to have equally general application. Two typical types of shackles seen in sculptured figures are the shackles for feet, connected by a short rope which limited the victim’s length of stride, and hand shackles connected to the neck by a short rope.
