Jahaz

JAHAZ jā’ hăz (יַ֖הַץ, יָ֑הְצָה). A city in Trans-Jordan, where the Amorite King Sihon was defeated in a great battle by the Israelites when he refused to allow them to pass through his territory (Num 21:23; Deut 2:32; Judg 11:20). Jahaz is mentioned in connection with Beth-baal-meon (Josh 13:17, 18, KJV Jahaza); and Kedemoth (21:36; Jahazah). Moses assigned the city to the tribe of Reuben (Josh 13:18), and it was one of the cities given to the Merarite Levites (Josh 13:18; 21:36; 1 Chron 6:78, KJV Jahzah). The Moabite Stone quotes Mesha as saying that the king of Israel lived in Jahaz while at war with him, but he was driven out, and Mesha took the city and added it to Moabite territory. Isaiah 15:4 and Jeremiah 48:21 refer to it as a city of Moab. Various identifications have been suggested, but none has met universal acceptance.
