Jeduthun

JEDUTHUN jī dōō’ then (יְדוּת֗וּן, ידֻתוּן, יְדוּתֽוּן). A Levitical singer who lived in the time of David, and the founder of a musical family. He is associated with Asaph and Heman as one of the three chief musicians of his time (1 Chron 25:1-3; 2 Chron 5:12). He is also known as Ethan, which may have been an earlier name of his (1 Chron 6:44). His is said to have prophesied (1 Chron 25:1, 3), and is called a royal seer (2 Chron 35:15), though this may mean no more than that he gave good advice to David. The name appears repeatedly in connection with temple music at important occasions in the reigns of Solomon (2 Chron 5:12), Hezekiah (2 Chron 29:14), and Josiah (2 Chron 35:15). The family continued to officiate after the Exile (Neh 11:17). The name is found in the titles of three psalms—39, 62, and 77—but its meaning or significance in this connection is not known; it is thought by some to refer to an instrument or to a tune. See Book of Psalms.
