PYGARG pī’ gärg (דִּישֹׁ֖ן, pygarg, Deut 14:5, KJV, ASV; Ibex RSV; πύγαργος, LXX). Pygarg is derived directly from the LXX, and is said to mean white-rumped; this is true of several deer and antelopes, esp. gazelles. Some authorities have identified it with the Addax, A. nasomaculatus. This is doubtful, for there is no evidence that this desert antelope was ever found N of Egypt, where it has been killed out within the past cent. In summer it is almost white, in winter grayish brown. It stands about three ft. and six inches at the shoulder and has long spiral horns.
