23:3 thirty years old. Apparently the age at which Levites began service was adjusted according to need: thirty years (Num. 4:1–3), twenty-five years (Num. 8:23–25), and twenty years (1 Chr. 23:24, 27). A period of apprenticeship may be in view in some passages.
