It may be that 1 Kin. 1:32–36 is the first anointing, accomplished in private and followed by the more public one. Both Saul (1 Sam. 10:1; 11:14–15) and David (1 Sam. 16:13; 2 Sam. 2:4; 5:3) received more than one anointing.
