2:17 whoever does the will of God abides forever. John is not teaching that our obedience merits eternal life. Only the obedience of Jesus could satisfy God’s demands. Believers receive eternal life as a gift (5:11), and the gift of love transforms them so that they do God’s will in gratitude (3:16).
