3:4 lawlessness. Though the Old Testament is not quoted explicitly in 1 John, its authority is presupposed. In particular, the moral law, summed up in the law of love, is still the norm for God’s people (Rom. 13:8–10). “Lawlessness” is disobedience to that law.
