21:3 The Lord forbid. Naboth’s reaction was quick, because his land was a sacred inheritance from the Lord. When the land was distributed following the conquest (Josh. 13–21), each family received its own inheritance as a divine gift and a trust. Since Naboth’s vineyard was his portion of his family’s inheritance, to sell it would mean cutting off his own descendants (Lev. 25:23; Num. 27:1–11; 36:1–12).
