1 Kings 4:26

4:26 40,000 stalls. There are variations in the versions as to how many stalls for chariot horses Solomon had. If the “12,000 horsemen” means “12,000 horses” then each stall had three horses, the normal complement for a chariot being two primary horses and one reserve. According to 10:26, Solomon had fourteen hundred chariots. Solomon’s chariot force and bureaucracy required ample, regular provisions (vv. 27, 28).
