1 Pet 5:2

5:2 shepherd the flock of God. This phrase broadly describes the functions of elders. The shepherd imagery suggests care, protection, discipline, and guidance (2:25 note). Jesus portrayed His own care for the church (John 10:1–18) and God’s gracious interest in sinners (Luke 15:3–7) as works of shepherding. The use of the word by Peter recalls his own recommissioning (John 21:15–17). See theological note “Pastors and Pastoral Care.”

not for shameful gain. Peter condemns not fair compensation, but love of gain and the abuse of trust (1 Cor. 9:14; 1 Tim. 5:17, 18).
