1 Sam 10:12

10:12 who is their father. Since leaders of prophetic guilds were sometimes called “father” (2 Kin. 2:12; 6:21), this question might be asking for the leader of this particular guild. If, on the other hand, the onlookers are contemptuous of prophecy, their surprise might be that a man like Saul, of good family and social standing, would associate with such “mad fellows” (cf. 2 Kin. 9:11), whose fathers were inferior to his. Still another possibility is that the question means that the “Father” or origin of the prophetic band does not follow normal rules, and Saul, unlikely as it may seem, has found a place with them. See “Prophets” at Deut. 18:18.
