15:3 devote to destruction. Lit. “place them under the ban.” This meant to devote persons or things completely to the Lord. In war it usually required the total destruction of properties and execution of people. The inclusion of animals in this verse is especially striking. The ban was an element of “holy war” and could not be decreed by anyone but God.
