1:9 man of God, the king says, ‘Come down.’ For Ahaziah, Elijah’s prophecy constituted interference in the affairs of state, and he should therefore be held accountable to the king for his actions. Ahaziah’s response reveals a characteristically Canaanite understanding of the unbridled powers of kingship (1 Sam. 8:11–17; 1 Kin. 21:2 note; cf. Deut. 17:14–20).
