20:4 Paul’s traveling companions are listed by name. They may have been official church representatives appointed to travel with Paul to deliver money collected for relief of the Jerusalem church (1 Cor. 16:1–4; 2 Cor. 9:1–5). Sopater may be the “Sosipater” mentioned in Rom. 16:21. Aristarchus had faithfully accompanied Paul during the third missionary journey (19:29), and he accompanied the apostle to Rome (27:2) where he shared Paul’s imprisonment (Col. 4:10). Secundus is not mentioned elsewhere in the New Testament. Gaius may be different from the Macedonian Gaius mentioned in 19:29. On Timothy, see Introduction to 1 Timothy: Date and Occasion. Tychicus was later Paul’s representative to various churches during the apostle’s imprisonments (Eph. 6:21; Col. 4:7–9; 2 Tim. 4:12). Trophimus accompanied Paul to Jerusalem where his presence in the city led to Paul’s arrest (21:29). He apparently accompanied Paul after the apostle’s release from the first Roman imprisonment (2 Tim. 4:20).
