11:34 they shall receive a little help. Possibly this is a reference to Mattathias, an elderly priest, and his five sons (John, Simon, Judas, Eleazar, and Jonathan) who waged a guerrilla war against the forced hellenization of the Jews. Mattathias died in 166 b.c. His sons, known as the Maccabees, carried on the struggle. Victory was achieved under Judas Maccabeus in December, 164 b.c., when the temple was cleansed and daily sacrifices were restored (1 Macc. 4:36–39).
