1:5 in the land of Moab. The Israelites are said to have camped in the plains of Moab (e.g., Num. 22:1; 26:3, 63) or in the land of Moab (e.g., Deut. 29:1; 32:49), but Israel was encamped north of the Arnon River, the northern border of Moab. The solution is that Moab earlier had held the northern territory but had been driven south of the Arnon by Sihon the Amorite (Num. 21:26). Jephthah rehearses this history in Judg. 11:14–27.
