16:7 in the morning . . . go to your tents. The lamb or goat was to be slaughtered at the sanctuary at sundown, roasted in that area for several hours, and then eaten at midnight. Following the celebration, the people would return to their tents in the morning. After their settlement in Canaan, when they assembled at the central sanctuary, the majority surely lived in tents again. In modern times the Samaritan Passover on Mount Gerizim is performed precisely in this way.
