Though Israel deserves utter destruction because of her disobedience (v. 26), the Lord preserves a remnant of the people, lest the Gentiles take credit for their victory over Israel and fail to see God’s hand in history. Assyria and Babylon were later judged for their arrogant misunderstanding (Is. 10:12–19; 47:6–8).
